November 1972, Action Comics #418, Page #8, John Calnan pencils/inks, "The Fountain of Death", (2nd Story), (complete 9 page story); drawn and inked by one of the most underrated artists in the history of comics, John Calnan, who also drew Batman in the late 1970s. One of the most memorable stories from my first year of reading comics - Metamorpho was a back-up feature that began in Action Comics #413 (check out the cover to Action #413 in my gallery). Simon Stagg, who is Metamorpho's future father-in-law dies and leaves his daughter Sapphire $80 million dollars (probably $1 billion today) but held in a trust to be given to her at only $50,000 a year; However, to Metamorpho he leaves $1 million on one condition - he has to retrieve Cryolite-60, which is a mineral found only in Greenland guarded by a Kraken. Metamorpho retrieves it at the risk of his own life. After he defeats the Kraken, he take the mineral back to Stagg. But he smells a rat so he sneaks into the Stagg Hall of Science building and finds Stagg dressed like the janitor. Apparently, he faked his own death so Metamorpho can retrieve the mineral that he thought would make him young again. But it turns out the mineral story was a fake.
